Alan Shilston remembered
We are very sorry to have to tell you that Alan
Shilston, who was a long standing member of this branch passed away on the day
of 2007.
Alan was one of the first members of the South
East Branch, which was founded in 1983 by the indomitable Dennis James and his
staunch supporters at the time. He was an eminent engineer of no little repute
who practiced under his own name in Surrey. He was also a Chartered Arbitrator
and well versed in alternative dispute resolution. Alan was on the panel of
both the Arbitrator's Institute and the Institute of Civil Engineers. As well
as being on the committee of the CIArb Branch, he was on the Council of the
Institute of Civil Engineers for many years. Dennis tells me that he was also a
keen member of the Conseil Nationale of French Engineers and a member of the
City Livery.
In 1980 he took over as Editor of the Institute's
Journal "Arbitration". He held the post for many years and was greatly
responsible for increasing and securing its reputation as a journal of the
highest quality. Not only was he an excellent editor, he was a generous
contributor with many articles of his own, written with great intelligence and
integrity, both for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Institute of
Civil Engineers.
Alan was a regular attendee at the Branch monthly
meetings and other functions. He was a highly respected member, and I recall,
one of the most approachable and friendliest of members that it was ever my
pleasure to meet. I will remember him as being one of the friendliest and most
sociable of the senior members of the Branch, particularly in the welcoming of
new members. He will be sadly missed.
