Young Members Activities In a recent survey of you, the membership of the South East Branch, a significant amount of interest was showed in developing activities for Young Members or alternatively ensuring that the current programme of activities was what the Young Members wanted and needed. I was, as a result, asked to say a few words about Young Members as since 2003 I have been chairing the Institute wide Young Members Group. The activities of the Young Members Group as a whole have so far been fairly limited, although highlights have included an international conference in 2003 and several seminars run by a Young Members group set up by the East Asia branch and similarly by the Scottish Branch. Following those success, and now that we have some understanding of how the Young Members Group could work, we have three initiatives for the coming year. First, we will be repeating the success of our International Conference, this year to be held in Paris. On current budget proposals, and bucking the usual trend, this will be cheaper than last year. Second, we have started to set up a form of mentoring to allow Young Members to build a network of contacts to help and guide their professional development. Third, we are instigating Young Members groups at a branch level to respond to the needs of Young Members on a local level. All three of these initiatives impact on the Young Members of the SE branch and I hope you will take part in the centralized mentoring scheme and attend the international conference, details of which will follow shortly in the Institute's Newsletter. However, what you can do now is start work on a SE Branch Young Members Group. The first stage is to identify those Young Members with an active interest in moving the group forward. That group can then concentrate on the local needs of Young Members and inform the SE Branch Committee of exactly what Young Members would like to do. In particular, the first thing that most groups want, and I am currently helping the London Branch to organize this, is a purely social event just so Young Members can get together and see how many other people there are in a similar position. Anyone who would like to be involved with the SE Branch Young Members group should email me on rob.horne@arbitrate.org.uk. Hopefully, in the next newsletter, we will be able to set out who the contact for SE Branch Young Members will be, and be in a position to look to the future of the Branch group. I look forward to hearing from you! Rob Horne (CIArb Young Members Group Chairman) |
