Forthcoming Meetings All members are welcome to attend the following technical meetings, organised for you by your local branch. Attendance is free to all grades of members and the atmosphere is informal. We especially welcome our newer members, who can meet and share experiences with other members of all grades. Existing and aspiring Chartered Arbitrators and members of Panels are reminded that they are required to gain at least 60 CPD points in each three-year period. Our technical meetings each count as 1.5 CPD points. So whether you are looking to add to your CPD, are interested in the topics, or just want to do some networking, why not come along? We also provide an optional hot buffet supper for those who wish to stay and socialise after the meeting (or who are hungry). The charge for this is a very reasonable £15.00 per head. Tuesday 6th June 2006 MEDIATION PRESENTATION ROD O'DRISCOLL A talk on the subject of mediation will be given by Rod O'Driscoll, supported by David Simmonds, after the Branch meeting to be held on the 06 June 2006. Both Roderick and David are accredited mediators and they will be joined by a third member for the purposes of the Demonstration. The increasing importance of knowing about and understanding the process of mediation, as far as the Construction Industry is concerned, will first be outlined. This will be followed by an explanation of the process usually adopted at mediation meetings and of the various tools used by mediators to assist the parties to come to their own agreement. There will then follow a short demonstration with a postlude describing the techniques actually used in the demonstration. Following this, those attending will be able to put forward comments and suggestions as to how they might have tried to deal with the situation. Saturday 17th June 2006 BRANCH SUMMER OUTING SISSINGHURST CASTLE GARDEN AND RANKINS RESTAURANT, SISSINGHURST, KENT Sissinghurst Castle Garden is world famous and is one of the finest gardens in the care of the National Trust. In 1930 Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson bought the romantic remains of Sissinghurst Castle, originally a splendid 16th century mansion. They repaired the brick structures and then gradually began to create a garden between the old walls and buildings. Harold Nicolson planned the garden but it was Vita Sackville-West who devised the inspired planting schemes and carried out the work. She had an abhorrence of regimented rows of flowers and carefully grouped the plants according to colour, texture and season. The rose garden, for which Sissinghurst is best known, is richly planted with old-fashioned species and contrasts vividly with the White Garden. This is the most original of all the separate gardens and here all the blossoms, including lavender, old roses, clematis and a double primrose are white and much of the foliage is grey. We will meet at 10.30am in the Granary Restaurant for coffee. There will then be time for visiting the gardens before lunch at 1.30pm in nearby Sissinghurst, where we have booked the whole of Rankins Restaurant. This is an intimate restaurant with a high standard of cooking (recommended by Michelin, AA rosette) and a warm welcome. There will be a choice of 2-course or 3-course menu. A typical menu can be seen at www.rankinsrestaurant.com As the restaurant is limited to 30 places, early booking is strongly recommended. Click here to download a Booking Form. Tuesday 12th September 2006 NEW MEMBERS' EVENING COLIN WALL - PRESIDENT OF THE INSTITUTE This is a meeting particularly for new members who have joined in the past year, but all other branch members are welcome as well. The Institute is not only a professional organisation promoting private dispute resolution (arbitration, mediation and adjudication). It is also an organisation of friends and colleagues. This is an excellent opportunity for new members to learn more about the Institute and to make new contacts in the Branch. We are very pleased that Colin Wall, President of the Institute for 2007, has accepted our invitation to speak at this meeting. Robin Orme, Branch Chairman, will also give a short introduction to the activities of the Branch. There will be tea and coffee before the talk from 6.00pm. Dinner afterwards will be at 8.00pm - there will be a special introductory reduction for new members to half price (£7.50 instead of £15.00). Colin Wall is an experienced and active arbitrator and mediator based in Hong Kong. He has also worked in the United Kingdom, Middle East and Japan.. He is a member of numerous arbitration and mediation panels. Colin is a strong supporter of mediation for resolving disputes. He is Deputy President of the UIA Forum of Mediation Centres and has attended and presented mediation seminars and papers in the USA, Far East, Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom. |
