Worshipful Company of Arbitrators Apprentice Scheme

The Worshipful Company of Arbitrators is no. 93 in the order of precedence amongst London's 107 no. Livery Companies, and was formed 26 years ago with the objectives of providing a means of professional and social contact amongst arbitrators and those engaged in related forms of dispute resolution, and of promoting the advancement of education in arbitration and ADR. The educational objectives of the Company are administered by its Charitable Trust, which is funded by its members.

One of the Trust's means of advancing education is through its Apprentice Scheme. This may be of interest to you, as a SE Branch member, or to someone you know, if you or they are currently engaged in arbitration or ADR studies, or are contemplating such studies, and have concerns about the cost. The purpose of the Apprentice Scheme is to provide financial and mentoring support to students engaged in learning the skills of an arbitrator, or the skills of other types of ADR practitioner. The Scheme is intended for anyone below the grade of Chartered Arbitrator, who is attempting to attain that qualification, or something similar.

Each successful applicant for Apprenticeship is assigned a Mentor, who will assist the student to set and achieve his or her educational and career goals as a dispute resolver, and is available to offer more general support and advice on related matters if requested. Financial assistance is also available in the form of grants and/or interest-free loans, depending on circumstances, for the purchase of reference books, contributions towards course fees and examination costs, and such other costs as are properly incurred in the student's education. Applicants who are not in need of financial assistance frequently apply simply for the mentoring support that the Scheme provides.

Applications are always welcome from CIArb members, or their friends, who are engaged in a course of study leading to a qualification in arbitration or ADR. So if this Apprentice Scheme is of interest to you, or perhaps to someone you know, I should be delighted to hear from you or them, as the case may be. Indeed, if you are interested in learning more about membership of the Worshipful Company itself, I should also be delighted to hear from you.
