Bodiam Castle By Steam Train On
The Kent & East Sussex Railway
Book now to reserve your place
for this popular day out! Numbers are limited. Friends and family welcome.
A return steam train journey
through the beautiful High Weald to the magnificent Bodiam Castle. Meet at the
car park of the Kent & East Sussex Railway in Tenterden, where the broad
and leafy High Street is charmingly lined by Tudor, Regency and Victorian
buildings, at 10am. We will then take the 10.40am train for the 50 minute
journey to Bodiam. The line gently winds its way for 10 miles or so through the
unspoilt Rother Valley, across the sheep-grazed Rother Levels before they
broaden out as we cross the Sussex border. The line then stays close to the
south banks of the River Rother until we get our first glimpse of the fairytale
moated Bodiam Castle. On arrival at Bodiam Station there is then a short walk
to the castle. Lunch will be served at the National Trust tearooms commencing
at 12noon.
 We are
then free to tour the castle owned by the National Trust. Built in 1385 by Sir
Edward Dalyngrigge as a fortified manor and home, the exterior is virtually
complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the broad moat. In the
impressive gatehouse is the castle's original wooden portcullis, an extremely
rare example of its kind. Inside there are spiral staircases and battlements to
explore. From the top of the towers there are wonderful views of the Rother
Valley.
Our return trip leaves Bodiam Station at 4.30pm,
arriving back at Tenterden at 5.15pm. We will have cream tea on the train.
