CHAIRMAN'S PAGE

Since I took office in April we have had three evening events and the summer outing. The summer outing was the first I had been able to attend, as I must confess to this not being really my sort of thing - or that was my view until I actually went along. I am grateful to Robin Orme for organising this event for me - as, I am sure, are all those who attended.

The numbers at recent events were close to our average. I accept that we all have commitments to other organisations; but surely we could increase the turnout to more than 40, when we have over 800 members in the Branch, the second largest to London. It takes a great deal of co-ordinated effort, all without charge by the members of the committee, to arrange these events. The calibre of speakers stands testament to this. The Branch seeks to represent and reflect the views and interests of its members, so I am constantly amazed that the turnout is as low as it is. Where are you all and why don't you attend? It may be we have misjudged the requirements of the membership. Unless you come to the lectures and let us know the sort of event you would like to see, nothing is likely to change.

There are eight lecture-type events each year, plus a visit from the current president. I would have thought each member could attend at least two of these events in a year. You will not be co-opted into helping, if that is your worry! At present, though, the committee is reliant on the same hardcore of supporters. New views and ideas are essential if the Branch is to flourish.

So please get off your backsides and support those trying to help you by attending the meetings and putting forward your views for future events.
