Keep up to date The importance of CPD The essence of ADR is the resolution of disputes using a third party who is technically familiar with the nature of the dispute. Thus arbitration/adjudication/mediation/etc (and particularly expert witness) is a secondary profession to us all. We cannot function properly as resolvers unless we keep up to date with our primary profession. A few years ago, when applying for a fellowship, I had to list my 'CPD' for the previous year. Although I had carried out some 80 hours, well in excess of the minimum, I was horrified to note that it was entirely dispute resolution or law. I resolved to ensure that I undertook 'CPD' in my primary profession. I would even suggest that lawyers may find it revealing to attend 'CPD' events run by the technical professions. Among the best ways of keeping up to date is to rely upon someone else to identify salient points and then get them to tell you about it our monthly meetings, although of high quality and are at no cost, have the capacity for far more members (and guests). Another way of increasing knowledge and experience in an enjoyable way is attendance at workshop sessions. While these sessions work at their best over a full day, an evening event has now been planned for 14 June. However, that still leaves the question of how we can find out about events that may help us with our CPD in our primary profession. In this respect help is at hand, at least for those in the construction industry. You can now visit www.cpdevents.org.uk and find out about events planned by many other construction institutes. I am sure that we will all be able to find much that is of interest to us. There is also a link to this site on our Home Page |
