Forthcoming Meetings

All members are welcome to attend the following technical meetings, organised for you by your local branch. Attendance is free to all grades of members and the atmosphere is informal. We especially welcome our newer members, who can meet and share experiences with other members of all grades.

Existing and aspiring Chartered Arbitrators and members of Panels are reminded that they are required to gain at least 60 CPD points in each three-year period. Our technical meetings each count as 1.5 CPD points. So whether you are looking to add to your CPD, are interested in the topics, or just want to do some networking, why not come along?

We also provide an optional hot buffet supper for those who wish to stay and socialise after the meeting (or who are hungry). The charge for this is a very reasonable £15 per head.

Tuesday 12th September 2006 - Bridge House Hotel, Reigate

NEW MEMBERS' EVENING

COLIN WALL - PRESIDENT OF THE INSTITUTE

This is a meeting particularly for new members who have joined in the past year, but all other branch members are welcome as well. The institute is not only a professional organisation promoting private dispute resolution (arbitration, mediation and adjudication). It is also an organisation of friends and colleagues. This is an excellent opportunity for new members to learn more about the Institute and to make new contacts in the Branch.

We are very pleased that Colin Wall, President of the Institute for 2007, has accepted our invitation to speak at this meeting. The South East Branch Chairman, will give an introduction to the activities of the Branch. There will also be a short presentation about the Institute's Young Members' Group.

There will be tea and coffee before the talk from 6pm. Dinner afterwards will be at 8pm - there will be a special introductory reduction for new members to half price (£7.50 instead of £15.00).

Colin Wall is an experienced and active arbitrator and mediator based in Hong Kong. He has also worked in the United Kingdom, Middle East and Japan.. He is a member of numerous arbitration and mediation panels.

Colin is a strong supporter of mediation for resolving disputes. He is Deputy President of the UIA Forum of Mediation Centres and has attended and presented mediation seminars and papers in the USA, Far East, Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom.

Monday 2nd October 2006 - Reigate Manor Hotel, Reigate

Wanted - Chartered Status (Calling all pupils looking to become Chartered)

ROD O'DRISCOLL

Are you working towards becoming a Chartered Arbitrator on the 'old' scheme? Are you worried about submitting your log book in time (February 2007 or lose out)? Are you unsure how to complete the rest of the log book? Well help is now at hand.

You can discuss your needs with local Chartered Arbitrators and we may be able to help you to complete and present your log book and whether what you have done to date is OK.

Tuesday 10th October 2006- Reigate Manor Hotel, Reigate

THE ROLE OF THE CIARB IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE

HEW DUNDAS - VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE INSTITUTE

PEER INTERVIEWS FOR FELLOWSHIP

The meeting will start with a talk by Hew Dundas, President-elect for 2007, on the role of the Institute in the administration of justice. This is of ever-increasing importance as all governments seek to contain costs by reducing the role of the state-backed courts in disputes of all types. More reliance than ever is being placed on private dispute resolution, which the Institute exists to promote.

Hew Dundas is a well-known international arbitrator, mediator and expert determiner. We are delighted that he has agreed to visit the Branch shortly before he takes over the mantle of President of the Institute from Colin Wall, our speaker in September. This is your opportunity to meet next year's President.

The second part of the meeting will include Peer Interviews, a new requirement since February 2006 for those wishing to transfer from Member to Fellow. These are quite informal, and all members of the Branch will be very welcome at this meeting.

Tuesday 14th November 2006 - Joint Meeting with ICE at the Rose & Crown Hotel, High Street, Tonbridge.

MANAGING THE RISK OF DISRUPTION AND PROLONGATION IN CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS

ROB BUCHANAN

Rob Buchanan is a solicitor with Pinsent Masons. Delay and disruption is often seen as inevitable in civil engineering works, where there can be many unknowns. In this joint meeting with the Institution of Civil Engineers Rob will review the way in which the different contracts commonly used for civil engineering works manage these risks.

This meeting will be a must for all dispute resolvers who are involved with civil engineering as well employers, contractors and subcontractors involved in the industry.

Saturday 18th November 2006 - Selsdon Park Hotel, Croydon

CIARB MEMBERS' CONFERENCE - RECEPTION HOSTED BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE S E BRANCH

The Members' Conference will take place at Selsdon Park Hotel, Croydon on Saturday 18th November and the morning of Sunday 19th November.

The theme of the conference will be "Our Profession, our skills" - identifying and marketing the core skills of dispute resolvers and advisors. Papers have been invited from members of the Institute and are expected to cover topics including the art of listening, body language, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), writing in concise language, and marketing.

The Chairman of the South East Branch will be hosting a reception in the evening of Friday 17th November. On Saturday 18th November there will be a trip to Brighton (including visit to the Royal Pavilion and lunch) and a Gala Dinner and Dance in the evening.

This conference will be an excellent opportunity to renew and extend those vital skills not normally covered in courses devoted to arbitration, mediation and adjudication. It will also be an opportunity to meet members from branches all over the world, as many branch representatives are expected to attend after Congress being held on 16th/17th November.

Tuesday 16th January 2007 - Reigate Manor Hotel, Reigate

ADJUDICATION AND THE CONSTRUCTION ACT REVIEW

MARION RICH (BCSA) and ROD PETTIGREW (HVCA)

Adjudication under the Construction Act has been under review by the Government and the DTI's consultation exercise was due to result in draft proposals and eventually legislation. The focus of the review was originally on improving the payment provisions (the impetus for bringing in adjudication), but this has proved much more problematic than addressing changes to adjudication procedures. At the time of going to press (August), announcements were expected.

Marion Rich (Director of Contractual and Legal Affairs for the British Constructional Steelwork Association) and Rod Pettigrew (Legal Adviser to the Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association) were both members of the Construction Act Review Payment Working Group.
