Peter Horne
I was very saddened to hear of Peter's sudden
death on Tuesday 3rd April 2007.
Although often seriously ill he succeeded in
living to the full in a way that put lesser but more robust mortals in the
shade. His considered and extensive contributions to the Branch Newsletter
testify to that, but he also played key roles on your committee, and it is
through such activities that most of you knew him.
Peter and I first met at a firm of claims
representatives in Crawley in the mid 1980s. We worked on several cases
together before I left in 1987. I was secretary of the Branch then and I would
like to think that my involvement played a part in persuading Peter to get
involved as he did later on. He certainly contributed more to the Branch than I
have ever done.
When we met, Peter was still in the throes of
amassing his impressive range of qualifications and was yet to achieve his LLB
for which endeavour he is greatly admired. Just after that achievement I
attended a conference at which Peter was also a delegate amongst many others.
The famous speaker, himself having become a barrister after previous careers,
saw him and said: 'There goes Peter Horne. He's just succeeded in passing his
LLB with honours. That is a remarkable achievement'. We all applauded.
Well Peter, do you know what!
We still are.
