Denbies Vineyard Dorking 3 Jul 1999

An absolutely beautiful day and, despite the semi-finals of Wimbledon, the visit produced a good turnout of 22.

The Vineyard is set in the Mole Valley on Surrey's North Downs and extends for 265 acres, it is the largest in England, although we were told there are 400 others, mainly in the South East. Perhaps the Institute should investigate this a bit closer.

Coffee was served in the amazing atrium which is a vast enclosed space between the shop and the brewery. We were then let through to a very revealing film of the development of the winery and then 3D, yes 3D with glasses - I thought these died out in the '60s - film of the growing vine of eight months in four minutes - brilliant!

From here it was a Disney-type train trip through the stainless steel tanks and funnels of the brewery ending deep into the cellars for the wine tasting.

Three excellent wines were served and a description of the different wines given. Then it was back to the Conservatory for an excellent salmon lunch, including wine. Probably the best of the day was the sparkling (Champagne-look-alike) rosé particularly liked by the Vice Chairman and where meaningful discussion on arbitration could be heard!

Altogether an excellent event and a benchmark for the future.
