OBITUARY
Ian Menzies
Ian died on 8 July 1999, aged 71, following a short course of chemotherapy. One of the bright stars of arbitration has been taken away from us, tragically young. A Scot, and proud of it, he had the Scottish attitude to education and headed the Chartered Institute's Education Committee for a period. He was also national Chairman from 1991-93.
His somewhat gruff exterior concealed a man of great kindness, as well as great erudition and analytical ability. A civil engineer, of wide and international experience, qualified in law he was ever ready to pass on his experience to his less able colleagues. He was a keen supporter of the SE Branch, and gave us a number of talks which were always worthwhile, and acted as Course Director on at least four Branch Surgeries.
Sitting once in London as a sole arbitrator in an international arbitration the law of the country of performance came into question. Ian stated that he was quite ignorant of that law; both advocates avowed that they were similarly placed. "Very well" said Ian, "I shall proceed on the basis that the law of X is identical with the law of England and Wales until you tell me otherwise". And so the arbitration proceeded immediately and to its conclusion.
Among his non-professional activities he was a Governor of West Kent College in Tonbridge, where he lived. He was also a member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. He is survived by his wife Monica, with whom (and his family) we share, if in a smaller way, a stunned sense of grief. He will be greatly missed.
